MY ROLE
Director

I’m a Director with 28 years of experience in interim management within Local Government. I’ve led the MJ Local Authority of the Year award from 2013 to 2023, making me a specialist in this field with a deep understanding of the sector.

What experience and expertise do you bring to your role?

28 years in Local Government interim management. I ran the MJ Local Authority of the Year award 2013 to 2023 so very much a specialist in this field

How are you helping people to achieve their full potential?

For me, mistakes are just part of learning (as long as you do learn from your mistakes!) and I don’t think you’re ever too old to learn, so I like to give people opportunities to grow.

What are your thoughts on the future of your sector?

Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) will fundamentally redraw the map and create significant churn in the most senior Local Government roles nationally.

What do you enjoy outside of work? Any hobbies?

Photography: Self-taught professional concert photographer with a strong portfolio of live music events.
Running: Passionate distance runner; completed the London Marathon in 2023 and have participated in several half marathons.
Piano: Classically trained to Grade 8 level. Although it’s been some time since formal training, I continue to play regularly.
Formula 1: Enthusiastic follower of the sport and a dedicated armchair fan.

What’s your top three podcasts/books?

When it comes to reading, I particularly enjoy music-related autobiographies, as they offer unique insights into the lives and journeys of artists.

What’s your go-to productivity trick?

Just take a decision and get on with it, there is no point delaying to tomorrow something that can be done today to the same standard.

How do you prefer to start your day?

Coffee! I am up at 6.30 with my children anyway.

What was your first job?

I worked for a firm of gardening contractors and in a shop around the time I left school, and did a leaflet drop for the opening of a new shopping centre but my first ‘proper’ job was at Hays Accountancy Personnel in 1997 doing temp finance recruitment across the Public Sector.

What’s the best advice you were ever given?

Control what you can control. There is little point trying to influence the outcome of things you actually have no control of.
