Director of Data Platforms and Engineering

A leading financial services and technology organisation is investing in the next phase of its enterprise data capability. As part of this, the business is looking to appoint a Director of Data Platforms and Engineering to lead the strategy, delivery and operational management of its data platform estate.
The Role
This is a key leadership appointment within the Group Technology function, responsible for shaping the long term strategy for data platforms, modernising legacy systems and driving the adoption of cloud based infrastructure.
The role will lead a multidisciplinary data engineering and platform team, working closely with senior business and technology stakeholders to deliver a scalable, secure and high performing data environment. It will also play a central role in embedding a data as a service culture across the organisation, ensuring business units can access and trust the data they need to make informed decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and deliver a modern data platform strategy aligned to business priorities
- Lead the end to end delivery of data engineering services and platform operations
- Build a high performing, engaged and resilient data engineering team
- Partner with business and technology leadership to embed data governance and product thinking
- Oversee platform service levels, operational resilience and regulatory compliance
- Manage vendor relationships and multi year technology investment plans
Candidate Profile
We are seeking an experienced data leader with a strong track record of delivering modern, cloud based data platforms in complex, regulated environments.
Candidates will need proven leadership experience at scale, strong stakeholder management capability and the technical credibility to influence at executive level. Experience of financial services, capital markets or fintech environments would be an advantage.
Key Experience
- Extensive leadership experience in data platform engineering, architecture and operations
- Successful delivery of large scale cloud based data platforms (GCP preferred, AWS also considered)
- Strong understanding of modern data architectures, data governance frameworks and engineering best practice
- Proven ability to build high performing, multi skilled teams in complex organisations
- Excellent stakeholder management, vendor oversight and operational resilience experience
